Andy Pages' Contact-Quality Breakout Is Real. His Slugging Line Has Outrun It.
The contact-quality improvement is established. The counting stats have gotten ahead of even that real gain.
“I never thought he was going to strike me out or dominate me,” Andy Pages told the Los Angeles Times. “I was 100% certain I was going to move the ball forward.”
That kind of conviction from a 25-year-old hitter usually reads as bravado. With Pages in 2026, it reads as a description of what’s actually happening at the plate. He’s hitting .294 with a .538 slugging percentage. He led MLB in RBIs through May 20 with 42 — 17 more than Shohei Ohtani at the same point. The breakout is real. But the version of it showing up in the counting stats is running about a gear ahead of the version the contact data can support. Pages has made a genuine, large-magnitude improvement in how hard he hits the ball. His slugging percentage, his RBI pace, and his production splits have all gotten ahead of even that real improvement. The interesting question isn’t whether Pages is better — he is. It’s how much of the current line he gets to keep.
Same swing, better contact
The simplest way to understand what changed for Pages is to separate what he’s doing with his swing from what he’s doing with his contact.

Pages’ 179 batted ball events and 440 competitive swings are a large enough sample that the contact-quality improvement doesn’t look like a two-week heater. The improvement in how hard Pages hits the ball is established. The question is whether his results have gotten ahead of even that real improvement.

Pages is making more contact and harder contact on the same swing, and the K-rate decline is a downstream effect of that skill rather than evidence of improved selectivity.
The risk sits in the chase rate itself. At 35.1%, Pages is expanding the zone aggressively, and his walk rate (6.6%, 26th percentile), while improved by two points year-over-year, still reflects a hitter who doesn’t take many free passes. Whether that split holds, narrows, or widens is an open question rather than a settled one.
His upcoming schedule (Arizona, the Angels, the White Sox) features below-average starting pitching with an average ERA of 4.41 and .341 xwOBA — favorable conditions for his profile to continue producing near-term. But the broader point stands: Pages’ profile plays up against average-or-below pitching and settles back toward ordinary against the best arms. But the counting-stat version of the breakout — the .538 SLG, the RBI pace — has gotten ahead of the contact-quality version. The SLG-to-xSLG gap and the opponent-tier splits both point to a hitter whose real level is excellent but not quite as dramatic as the current line.
The next test is straightforward: whether the contact-quality gains hold as the schedule rotates and the opponent mix evens out. If the hard-hit rate stays near 48% and the xwOBA holds in the .350–.360 range, Pages has established himself as a legitimate middle-of-the-order hitter on a contending team.
