Who’s Going to Win?

The World Series in 2022 brings us a matchup that few could have predicted at the start of the playoffs. Granted, the Houston Astros returning to the Fall Classic for the fourth time in six years wasn’t one of the boldest World Series predictions for 2022. But the same can’t be said of the Philadelphia Phillies. They were the last seed in the National League and wouldn’t have even made the playoffs, much less the World Series in 2022, if not for MLB’s expanded playoffs.

The Phillies deserve a lot of credit for making it this far. They eliminated the Cardinals, Braves, and Padres on their way to the World Series in 2022. But they didn’t have to face the Dodgers, the best team in the National League during the regular season. They won’t have the same fortune in avoiding the Astros, who were the best team in the American League during the regular season.

The Astros are a perfect 7-0 in the postseason. They also took two out of three games against the Phillies during the final series of the regular season. Plus, the Astros have a home-field advantage and are 59-26 (.694) at home this year. Add it all up, and it’s hard to believe the Astros will falter now, so the first of our World Series predictions in 2022 is the Astros winning it all.

How Long Will It Take?

Of course, just because our World Series 2022 predictions include the Astros winning doesn’t mean the Phillies aren’t going to put up a fight. Philadelphia is 9-2 during the postseason against three quality teams, including two division winners. The Phillies are also 5-0 at home in the postseason. That should enable the Phillies to win at least a couple of home games when they host Games 3-5 of the World Series 2022.

The Phillies also have a bona fide ace in Zack Wheeler, who’s been outstanding during the playoffs. In his four postseason starts, Wheeler has posted a 1.78 ERA. He’s pitched at least six shutout innings in two of those four starts while allowing just five runs on 10 hits over 25.1 innings. He will help ensure that the Astros don’t sweep the Phillies as the Mariners and Yankees did.

The Philadelphia pitchers should get some help from a lineup that’s hit 16 home runs in 11 games on their way to the 2022 World Series. In those 11 playoff games, the Phillies are averaging 5.2 runs per game. That’s why we like the 2022 World Series odds of +400 at BetMGM for the Phillies to win a few games, pushing the Astros to six.

Digging the Long Ball

In years to come, fans might look back at the World Series in 2022 and remember it for its home runs. The Phillies have hit 16 homers in 11 games, while the Astros have hit 12 homers in their seven playoff games. With both teams playing in stadiums that ranked among the top 10 in home runs conceded in 2022, our World Series predictions for 2022 project plenty during the Fall Classic.

At the moment, Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins lead the way with five home runs each during the postseason. Harper, in particular, has been close to unstoppable, batting .419 along with those five homers. Meanwhile, Jeremy Pena leads the Astros with three postseason homers, while four other players have hit two long balls each on the way to the World Series 2022.

But we predict that Yordan Alvarez will steal the show with his power. Caesars offers favorable 2022 World Series Odds of +1200 for him to be Home Run Leader.  Alvarez began the postseason with a walk-off home run against the Mariners to win Game 1 of the ALDS. He’s cooled down a little since then and hit just one home run in the last six games. But Alvarez hit 37 homers during the regular season and went 6 for 11 (albeit without a home run) against Philadelphia’s pitchers during the season’s final series. Alvarez will shine during the World Series in 2022 and lead all hitters in home runs.

Sit Down

Regarding betting on the pitcher with the most strikeouts, the 2022 World Series odds of +350 at Caesars are attractive in support of Justin Verlander. After a troublesome start in the ALDS, Verlander bounced back with 11 strikeouts in six innings against the Yankees in the ALCS. He also struck out 10 Phillies during his final start of the regular season, allowing Verlander to strike out at least eight batters in four of his last six starts during the regular season.

Verlander is a safe bet to get at least two starts in this series, which means he’ll have more opportunities to strike out batters than other pitchers. While Wheeler should get two starts as well, he’s averaging just under a strikeout per inning during the playoffs, while Verlander has 14 strikeouts in his 10 postseason innings.

The power hitters in Philadelphia’s lineup are more prone to striking out than the Astros, who had the second-fewest strikeouts in the majors this year. We expect Verlander to seize upon that, which is why our World Series predictions for 2022 include Houston’s ace registering more strikeouts than any other pitcher.
