Update on Soccer Fixtures: 09/09/2022

Following the sad passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II, the FA has decided to postpone all football fixtures between September 9th-11th. No announcement has been made yet as to when these fixtures will be rearranged, considering upcoming International breaks and a tight schedule, this could be moved to later in the season. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this difficult time.

We'll be updating this article as the schedule becomes clearer.

Closing the Gap

Arsenals’ honeymoon period has come to an end after their first loss against Manchester United over the weekend. Bringing them just one point away from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, now is not the time to drop the ball…

Looking at their previous run of games, it’s fair to say that they had an easy run, but with this came high expectations for Mikel Arteta. The pressure clearly got to them against an improving Manchester United side, who caught Arsenal by surprise on the counter-attack more than they should have. Eriksen has quickly adapted to the Ten Hags style of play and become a central part of the team, finding passes with what can only be described as moments of magic.

Liverpool remains the only team in the exclusive “Big 6” outside of the coveted spots. A fiery Merseyside derby saw them escape with just 1-point, which feels like 1 more than they should have. A superb performance from Jordan Pickford saw him deny 7 chances, yet it raises concerns around the Reds' frontline in particular newcomer Darwin Nunez. At a price tag of around $98m, it’s sure to be a disappointment for Jurgen Klopp but also one to avoid in our EPL week 7 predictions.

A third consecutive loss for Nottingham Forest sees them into the relegation zone. A closely contested match against Bournemouth ended with them losing a 2-0 lead entering the second half. Despite a huge squad overhaul (a whopping 21 summer signings!), the team is yet to click and is leaving huge amounts of space around the defense allowing opponents to take advantage. Conceding 8 goals across the last two fixtures does warrant some attention from bettors looking to find value.

With the international break approaching, teams will want to enter the period with some positive results under their belt. Chelsea @ Fulham: Predictions and Best Bets

Game Postponed

Chelsea is yet to benefit from their serious investments over the summer. With this slow start, it’s not surprising that their EPL odds place them finishing bottom among the other “Big 6”. Rewind back a few weeks ago, this would’ve been a delusional statement considering they’d signed massive reinforcements to their backline with the likes of Koulibaly, Fofana, and Cucurella - totaling an eyewatering $190 million. Having kept only 1 clean sheet in the campaign so far, they’re finding themselves consistently on the backfoot or creating errors (3 big ones so far!) which have led to goals.

Luck has also been on their side, with an extremely controversial VAR decision being given in their favor during their game against West Ham. Declan Rice and David Moyes have been extremely vocal about this, however, these are not the fine margins Thomas Tuchel needed to find himself in, resulting in his sacking on September 7th. Having only 69 shots with 21 on target so far mean they are in the bottom half of the table when looking at shots across 90 minutes. This is far too little if they want to be competing with the other giants of the Premier League.

Their game against Fulham will be a solid chance to turn this around, only Nottingham Forest has a higher xG Conceded. Allowing teams easy chances on goal is causing them trouble with their only clean sheet coming from the draw against Wolves. We’d expect Chelsea to dominate the game with an average possession of 61.4% so far, but Mitrovic is one to watch as his physicality has proven a challenge for defenders if they can catch them on the counterattack; scoring 6 times so far.

Improvements must be just around the corner for Chelsea, whilst the headlines discuss which manager may be Tuchels replacement, players will be out to prove a point. We suspect a closely contested. Our Premier League week 7 predictions back Chelsea taking the 3 points, but fancy Mitrovic to score during the match.

Tottenham @ Manchester City: Predictions and Best Bets

Game Postponed

Manchester City is proving themselves as the team to beat across Europe. Despite having a crammed schedule including Champions League fixtures, City has scored 18 goals across their last 5 competitive fixtures. Incomer Erling Haaland has to be credited for this dominating performance, bagging 10 goals in the Premier League so far and a further two in their European fixture against Sevilla. None of this would be possible without the A-list lineup behind their frontman, creating 23 big chances so far, which is 35% more than the next team.

On paper, Tottenham look like worthy adversaries for Pep’s squad. Conte has revitalized the team and they’ve nailed his counter-attacking style of play. Spurs have managed the fourth-highest number of shots (93) in the league, with better accuracy (37.6%) than Manchester City (35%). Whilst this means we can expect an action-packed game, we’d expect this still to be in favor of the Blues. No matter how good Spurs look on the counterattack, breaking down City will prove extremely difficult, as they’ve already proven by conceding the least number of shots per game of the campaign so far (5.7 per/90).

The other factor in this comes down to the players themselves. It’s impossible to find a chink in the armor of Manchester City, with any of the players more than capable of walking into any other starting 11 in the world. Each player has their part to play as they look set to cruise the Premier League, whereas the same cannot be said for Tottenham. The obvious omission is Heung-Min Son, last year’s golden boot winner has yet to find his name on a scoresheet despite having 17 shots. Now they have the reinforcements to replace him but they cannot go toe-to-toe with City.

This game will be a crucial one, the winner of this one will cement their position in the table as they are currently level on points. It’s sure to be an aggressive stand-out fixture with all players laying it on the line. It’s hard to look past Haaland in his current form, averaging a goal every 54 minutes, considering the stakes, we’d back him to bag a brace - the EPL week 7 odds seem to support this too.

Nottingham Forest vs Leeds United: Predictions and Best Bets

Game Postponed

For both managers, their previous games will be rich with lessons that they’ll have to act on moving forward. Whilst temper will be an easy fix for Marsch, fixing the defensive issues may be a tricker one. Leeds have improved significantly from the previous season, cutting their goals against per 90 down from 2.08 to 1.67, a foot in the right direction, however, inexperience was the glaring issue over the weekend. Keeper Illan Meslier is the league's youngest goalkeeper and a barrage of mistakes led to Brentford breezing towards the three points. The hope of bringing in Roca and Kristensen was to limit opponents' chances through on goal, but the latest indicates that the latter may be out for a further 2 weeks.

Despite this, Leeds has had an energy upfront that has been widely praised. Matching Liverpool and Manchester United for big chances created (11) and successfully tackling more than any other team in the league has meant their games do not lack intensity. Nottingham Forest will be the perfect team to bounce back against, considering they have conceded the third-highest number of goals (14). Their problems against the Cherries were clear with a leaky defense, by playing 3 central attacking midfielders, large gaps were clear for Bournemouth to take advantage of. This only spells trouble for Forest up against a vicious Leeds squad, if this is not addressed.

Even with the departures of Phillips and Raphinha, Leeds has built on the creativity seen last year. Aaronson has slipped in well into the squad and Luis Sinnestera is proving an excellent marksman for the team. Averaging 0.99 goals per match (so close!), he’s taking chances they would’ve avoided last season. Barring another injury, he is one of the more important players at the moment if they want to be pushing the top half of the table.

All things considered, neither team is likely to keep a clean sheet during the match, with each team taking any points they can get at the moment, we can see this being a high-scoring game. Our favorite Luis Sinnestera is difficult to ignore in his current form as well - we’d back him to score for a third consecutive game.
