Coach Chris Finch is not asking anyone to be the hero. After Wednesday's 119-114 home loss to Golden State, his message was pointed: "Everybody kind of launched a deep 3 on their first touch. They weren't going in, and that kind of played us right out of a rhythm." His adjustment for Friday is direct: flow over forced offense, correct decisions over hero-ball, no panic-shooting on first touches. Minnesota sits at 1-1 at home through two games in this small early sample, averaging 115.5 points in those contests. Gobert's defensive anchor stays intact, and the team's defensive rating of 102.5 ranks second in the league through five early games. The defense does not disappear without Edwards. The offense needs to find a new rhythm.
The LA Clippers arrive with their own walking wounded. Brandon Ingram, Max Strus, Bradley Beal, and Jordan Miller are all out. Rui Hachimura is questionable with a quad issue. What remains is Darius Garland running 31.8% of the offensive load, 19.3 drives per game at 60% drive field goal percentage. He is, effectively, LA's entire scoring plan. Coach Tyronn Lue knows it: "We've got to play up-tempo. When we get stops, get out in transition and run, advance, attack early." The Clippers are 0-2 away from home this season in a small sample and have dropped three straight after winning their opener. Their defensive rating of 106.1 ranks sixth in the league, so they carry real teeth on that end. But their 104.9 offensive rating ranks 28th. Even with pace intentions, generating enough points against Gobert's rim deterrence over 48 minutes is a structural problem.
These two teams have not met yet this season, so current head-to-head data does not exist. Last season, Garland averaged 19.7 points against Minnesota across three games, sitting almost exactly on his current 19.5 points line. The matchup I keep circling back to is Garland attacking Gobert in pick-and-roll. Gobert's 42.9% true shooting percentage this season reveals his offensive limitations, but his rim protection is still his primary defensive value. Garland's 19.3 drives per game at 60% conversion is exactly the kind of attack that finds cracks in coverage. If Garland gets his, Minnesota will need its own offense running clean to keep the margin comfortable enough to matter for the spread.
Picks made October 30, 2026 at 06:55 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The best value on this card is Gobert under 9.5 rebounds at +176. The market prices the over at 80% certainty. The historical data says closer to 50%, and last season LA held him to 8.0 boards per game in four meetings. That pricing gap is where the money is. LaMelo's assist over at -345 is the safest line on the board, supported by his early-season averages, his clear primary creator role, and a game script that keeps him in the game and distributing throughout. The Garland under at +196 is the most interesting contrarian prop: the market is dramatically underweighting his historical scoring floor against a defense that has historically limited him right at this number. Take the Timberwolves to cover, trust LaMelo's assist floor as the bedrock pick, and find your best standalone value in the Gobert boards under at plus-money.
