Through August, Kyle Tucker was being written up as one of the biggest free-agent flops in baseball, a $240 million bat hitting .226 with a .692 OPS, with the calls to bench or platoon him getting louder by the week. Then September arrived, and so did Dave Roberts’ vote of confidence: “I told him, I’m gonna ride or die with him.” Tucker rewarded it immediately, and the narrative flipped just as hard as it had soured. Now the story is a redemption arc, a cleaned-up swing, a retooled bat path, a slugger who finally figured it out.
Half of that is right. The surge is real, and it was earned rather than dropped in Tucker’s lap by friendly bounces. But the mechanism behind it isn’t the one the coverage is selling. What actually came back is the most durable skill Tucker has ever had: his eye. And once you separate the part that’s a genuine return to form from the part that’s a small-sample power spike against soft pitching, the honest read is narrower, real, but context-inflated, and due to cool off against the arms he’s about to see.
The real driver: he stopped chasing
Start with the swing decisions, because that’s where the credible change lives. In the last two weeks, Tucker’s chase rate fell to 16.8% from an earlier 24.5%, his whiff rate dropped to 14.5% against a 21.4% season mark, and his strikeout rate collapsed to 11.8% from a 17.2% season figure. He wasn’t expanding the zone anymore. He was making pitchers come to him.
The important word here is return. This isn’t a new skill Tucker taught himself in September, it’s the profile he’s always carried, resurfacing after a season in which his chase rate had crept the wrong way. His zone-swing rate sits at 74.1%, in the 91st percentile: the mark of a hitter who punishes strikes and lays off the rest. When he’s right, that’s the engine. What broke earlier in the year was the discipline, and what came back in September was the discipline.

What the window does support is that the contact was earned while it was happening. His expected wOBA over the stretch was .422, up from .324 in the prior window, meaning the Statcast model, which grades contact quality independent of whether the ball found grass, agreed with the loud results. This wasn’t a bloop-and-blast mirage. But that .422 also towers over his .332 season xwOBA, which tells you the same thing from the other side: it’s a directional in-window reading destined to regress, not a true-talent reset.
The bunched-up power is the tell. When a hitter’s home run total spikes in a tight cluster of games, that’s the shape of a hot streak, not a new baseline.

What the coverage gets wrong
The popular explanation is mechanical. Roberts has said Tucker cleaned up his bat path and is staying in the zone longer, and beat reporting has noted that earlier in the year he wasn’t staying on breaking balls and was getting underneath fastballs. It’s a tidy story: the swing was broken, someone fixed it.
The trouble is that a mechanical change should leave a mechanical fingerprint, in bat speed, in swing length, and the bat-tracking doesn’t show one.
The Bat-Tracking Shows No Swing Overhaul

Bat speed is 71.4 mph, down 0.6 year over year. Swing length is 7.4 feet, down 0.2. Flat-to-slightly-down in both. Whatever changed in September, the season-level tracking data doesn’t register it as a rebuilt swing. That’s why the confirmable driver here is approach, pitch selection, and not mechanics.
To be fair to Roberts and the beat writers: the season-level tracking can’t confirm a September swing change, and that’s not the same as proving nothing changed. It’s entirely possible they’re describing a real adjustment that the full-season numbers don’t capture, and the rising launch angle is at least consistent with one. But “consistent with” is not “confirmed.” On the evidence, the swing-overhaul framing is a story the data doesn’t support, and the selectivity story is one it does.
The part nobody’s pricing in: who he faced
Here is the fact that reframes the whole surge. Tucker’s September came against below-average pitching. The recent slate carried a 4.78 opponent ERA against his 4.33 season average, a 0.45 gap that grades as easier than his norm, and the arms rated below average by contact quality allowed (.327 expected wOBA against, versus his .316 season baseline).
That would be a footnote if Tucker hit everyone the same. He doesn’t. His production is bimodal by opponent quality, a genuine middle-of-the-order bat against bottom-third pitching, and something close to replacement level against top-third arms. The OPS gap between the two is more than 200 points, and the September stretch fell heavily on the friendly side of it.
Both things are true at once: Tucker got better and Tucker faced easier arms. The discipline rebound is genuine; the magnitude was flattered by the schedule. Note the honest limit on this, though, that in-window .422 xwOBA is opponent-independent, so soft pitching doesn’t erase the contact bump entirely. And his .300 xwOBA against top-third arms is right around league average. He isn’t helpless against quality; he’s just meaningfully better against everyone else, and September gave him a lot of everyone else.
Where he actually lands
So project forward with both hands on the wheel. The September power peak regresses, that part is close to certain, given a 18.4% barrel rate that has no business holding over a full season. But there’s a quieter case cutting the other way, and it’s worth taking seriously.
He Was Better Than the Box Score All Year

All year, Tucker underperformed his expected stats. His batting average sat at .232 against a .255 expected mark, a 23-point gap flagged as regression-to-the-mean territory, and his wOBA trailed his xwOBA .319 to .332. Expected stats grade the quality of contact, so when the actual results lag them, it usually means the hitter was a touch unlucky. That points to a true level modestly above his .718 season OPS, the box score sold him a little short.
Modestly is the operative word. These gaps are small and directional, and part of that BABIP shortfall is legitimately Tucker’s own doing: 26th-percentile sprint speed means he simply doesn’t beat out the marginal grounders and bloops that faster hitters convert. So the landing spot isn’t the September fireworks and it isn’t the August misery, it’s somewhere in between, a bit better than his season line suggests but well short of the two-week peak.
None of this reads on his role. Tucker has been available all year, on a 145-game pace with no injury signal, so this is a story about form and not a return from anything. He’s produced it hitting from the six-hole after being dropped from cleanup during the slump, and Roberts’ “ride or die” backing means his spot isn’t in question. The one flag worth planting is where the surge happened: his season home/away split is stark, .572 at home, .853 on the road, and the hot stretch has been road-heavy. That’s a season-long pattern that predates September, not something measured during the streak, so don’t read it as a looming Dodger Stadium playoff problem.
The test that matters is simpler. Paired with a discipline rebound built against soft arms, the open question that decides whether this run travels is the schedule: the playoff bracket brings the top-third pitching Tucker hasn’t had to solve in weeks, and that, not the bat path, tells you how much of September was Tucker and how much was the calendar.
