Melton has been sharp even when he hasn't had his best command. His last three starts produced 5, 9, and 9 strikeouts, and that five-strikeout outing came in a 5.0-inning walk-fest where four free passes cost him efficiency. When his secondary stuff is on, he misses bats in bunches. Baltimore's lineup has virtually no read on him. Ward is 0-for-5 in career plate appearances against Melton. Henderson, Holliday, and Taveras are a combined 0-for-7. Several likely Baltimore starters have no recorded exposure to him at all. That kind of unfamiliarity is a genuine edge, and at 8.25 K/9 on the season, Melton tends to make lineups pay when they can't time his pitch sequencing.
Kremer's vulnerability, though, is the louder number. He has allowed 10 home runs in 32.0 innings pitched in 2026, a 2.81 HR/9 rate that is extreme by any standard. Comerica Park carries a home run factor of 0.92, which provides mild suppression, but no park neutralizes a rate that elevated. Dillon Dingler, who has hit 22 home runs with a 1.053 OPS over his last seven days, went deep against Kremer in their only five career plate appearances together. Riley Greene slashes .281/.369/.464 with 15 home runs against right-handed pitching this season. Kremer has also lost both of his career starts at Comerica, allowing a combined nine earned runs across 12.2 innings. He walks into the worst possible ballpark against the worst possible lineup for his specific weakness.
Baltimore arrives here with real momentum. As one analyst described their recent stretch: "Over their last 12 games, the Orioles own a 113 wRC+, .334 wOBA, and .745 OPS, while continuing to swing the bats at a much more consistent level." They won Game 1 here 8-5 and drained Detroit's bullpen in the process. If Melton can't complete six innings, that matters. He has topped 5.2 innings just once in his last three starts. Detroit's pen was taxed yesterday, and a short outing puts real pressure on a bullpen that has already worked hard this week. But the starter quality gap is the dominant factor, and Detroit is at home and desperate for a win after three straight losses.

The caveat is outing length. Melton has not gone deep in two of his last three starts. Baltimore just won here yesterday 8-5 with a lineup that has posted a 113 wRC+ over 12 games. If Detroit's taxed bullpen has to cover four-plus innings after a short Melton exit, this game could slip quickly. The contrarian case for Baltimore's moneyline at +124 is not without merit for bettors who want to buy the momentum angle, but the pitcher-quality edge is too significant to flip sides on. Detroit is the right team, and the mound is the reason.
Best standalone play: Melton Over 5.5 Strikeouts at even money. He has the strikeout profile, Baltimore has minimal familiarity with him, and +100 on an 8.25 K/9 arm is a genuine value opportunity. For the full slate, see our MLB picks today, NRFI picks, and player props.
