Atlanta's bullpen enters this MLB game with a 3.06 ERA, one of the best marks in baseball. That unit is the real starting pitcher once Smith-Shawver exits around the fourth or fifth inning, and it changes the calculus in ways the opener ERA alone does not capture. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are operating shorthanded. Andy Pages is out a minimum of four weeks after a left hand fracture, and the lineup now leans more heavily on Mookie Betts, Teoscar Hernández, and Kyle Tucker, three bats in inconsistent recent form. Shohei Ohtani remains the engine of this offense with a .970 OPS over the last 28 days, but no lineup survives on one player alone, and Los Angeles is thinner tonight than the market fully prices in.
The batter-vs-pitcher history here is thin but meaningful in one spot. Ozzie Albies went 2-for-3 with a home run and a 2.334 OPS against Sasaki in their lone 2025 meeting, the highest single-game OPS of any Atlanta batter with career data against this pitcher. Albies bats near the top of the order, and Sasaki's 3.57 BB/9 rate gives him multiple looks in any at-bat with a patient approach. Austin Riley carries a 1.167 OPS in 3 career PA against Sasaki, a number that matters more for context than prediction given the tiny sample. Matt Olson is 0-for-3 lifetime, but Olson has 36 home runs and a .895 OPS against right-handers this season, and Sasaki has allowed 21 home runs in 116 innings. Every time those two share a moment, the math tilts toward damage.
The series context is important. Atlanta won this series opener 4-3 yesterday and is 43-23 at home this season despite dropping seven of their last ten overall. As Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before this series: "Obviously, I think the season series matters, and hopefully, it doesn't come into play. They're a really good ballclub. I think they're sort of scuffling right now, but we're going to get their best." That framing is honest. Atlanta is scuffling. But scuffling at home with an elite bullpen and a depleted opponent is a different beast than scuffling on the road in Milwaukee.
Picks made August 26, 2026 at 05:39 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The contrarian case for the Dodgers is legitimate and worth respecting. Sasaki is the better arm tonight. Los Angeles is 80-52. Atlanta has lost seven of their last ten. If you prefer the favorite, Dodgers ML at -127 is not irrational. But the edge in betting is not always on the better team. It lives on the mispriced side of the coin-flip, and tonight that side is Atlanta. Variance is real in every single game of baseball. Manage your units responsibly and never bet more than you are comfortable losing.
