Fried's last three starts show the range you have to account for. He struck out 7 in 5.1 innings against Chicago on August 1. He lasted just 3.0 innings in his prior start against the White Sox, allowing 3 runs. That number inflates his recent surface ERA but reflects an abbreviated outing, not a breakdown. Two starts back he struck out 7 in 5.0 clean innings against Pittsburgh. He comes into Friday with six days of extended rest, pitching at home, against a lineup that has never faced him in documented regular-season action. Matt Olson, Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies, Michael Harris II, and Austin Riley carry zero career plate appearances against Fried. First-exposure matchups against a lefty posting near-1.00 WHIP with pinpoint control trend toward the pitcher, not the hitters.
The Yankees enter this game severely shorthanded. Aaron Judge has not taken a swing since May 31. As MLB.com reported: "Rib is not completely healed but this is a first step toward baseball activities; Judge has not swung a bat since May 31." Bellinger, Stanton, and Rodon are also unavailable. Ben Rice's 31 home runs are carrying the offensive load for a lineup thinner than its 64-51 record suggests. Atlanta, on the other hand, arrives on an 8-game winning streak, having outscored opponents 31-11 over their last five wins. Mauricio Dubón went 4-for-4 Thursday in an 11-3 win over Miami and enters this series in form. The Braves are the best team in baseball by record, and they know it.
The critical subplot on Atlanta's pitching side is Paul Goldschmidt against Mahle. Goldschmidt owns a .379 average and 1.234 OPS in 34 career plate appearances against tonight's Atlanta starter, including 3 home runs spread across multiple seasons. That is not a small sample artifact. Yankee Stadium's HR park factor of 1.15 adds to a setup where Goldschmidt profiles as the most dangerous individual bat in either lineup given the specific matchup. Lane Thomas, meanwhile, is 1-for-19 (.053 AVG, 0.106 OPS) in his career against Fried across four separate seasons. The structural dead spots this creates in Atlanta's order compound when six of their core hitters are meeting Fried for the first time tonight. That asymmetry, Fried knowing them and them not knowing him, is the real story underneath the record disparity.

The honest caveat is Mahle's ceiling. His July 27 start against Milwaukee, 6 innings and zero runs, showed he can pitch to his upside when his command holds. If that version of Mahle shows up tonight, the Over 8.0 stalls and the Yankees' path to a comfortable run advantage narrows considerably. Atlanta's 8-game winning streak and 70-45 record carry real weight, and the Braves have shown all month they can grind out wins against quality pitching. Goldschmidt's career numbers against Mahle (.379 AVG, 1.234 OPS, 3 HR in 34 PA) remain the X-factor on the New York side. If he is right, the Yankees find runs in the middle innings. If he is cold, the lineup around him has to find another way against a pitcher capable of holding the line when his stuff is working. This game is tighter than the surface narrative suggests, and the spread props (Thomas and Grisham under hits) offer the cleanest edges with the least variance.
