Hunter Brown is a different story entirely. The season-level numbers show 4.05 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 40 innings, which looks tolerable in isolation. But the process underneath those numbers is broken. Brown has walked 28 batters in 40 innings this year, a 6.3 BB/9 rate that is more than double his 2.77 BB/9 from his dominant 2025 campaign. His last three outings: 6 BB in 4.2 innings against Baltimore, 5 BB in 6.0 innings against Texas, 4 BB in 4.0 innings against Tampa Bay. That is 15 walks in 14.2 innings. This is not a recent rough patch. It has been there from his first start of 2026 and it has not budged. Six days of rest is unlikely to resolve a mechanical issue that has persisted across every inning he has thrown this season.
Thursday's collapse frames tonight's stakes directly. Houston scored 8 runs in a single inning, draining the White Sox bullpen in the process. Davis Martin, Bryan Hudson, and Seranthony Dominguez all contributed to the damage. Will Venable said afterward: "We did have opportunities there. Just weren't able to capitalize. Today five runs wasn't enough. We had to figure out a way to score a few more." Chicago also went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position Thursday, a clutch failure that exposed real offensive limits even when they were generating traffic on the bases. The White Sox respond tonight with their best starter and a home record of 31-18 that has been one of the better marks in the league.
The complicating factor on Houston's side is Yordan Alvarez. He is batting .397 in July with a 1.337 OPS over his last seven days, currently on a 10-game hit streak while hunting the Triple Crown at 34 home runs and 77 RBI. Rate Field plays at a 1.08 home run factor, above the league average, and Brown's inability to throw strikes means free baserunners that a hitter of Alvarez's caliber turns into damage at the highest rate in baseball. No career matchup data exists between Alvarez and Burke. Everything in this game anchors on one question: how deep can Burke go, and what does the White Sox bullpen look like if he cannot reach the seventh?
Picks made July 25, 2026 at 05:37 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The single best bet on this card is Brown Under 5.5 strikeouts at -105. He recorded 4, 4, and 3 strikeouts in his last three starts, and the market is still pricing this as a near-coin flip. That is a mispricing worth attacking. Pair it with Alvarez Over 1.5 total bases at -101 for a two-leg anchor. Davis Martin said after Thursday: "It's really hard. It's unacceptable." The bullpen caveat is real. If Burke cannot get through six or seven innings, that relieved corps faces a Houston lineup that just put up 8 runs in a single inning. The pick is Chicago, but keep margin expectations modest. This is a two-to-three-run game, not a comfortable win.
