The Pittsburgh offense is in a documented post-break collapse. They were the second-best offense in baseball before the break. Since then, they have gone 8-16, rank among the five worst offenses in that span, and have been averaging fewer than three runs per game. The Cruz and Griffin injuries have exposed just how thin the lineup depth really is. As Pittsburgh manager Don Kelly said after Monday's shutout loss: "Anybody this time of year is not injured, but guys in August aren't 100%." That quote applies to the whole roster. Spencer Horwitz added, "He did a good job locating. I think we could have done a better job of grinding out more at-bats." Against a pitcher like Phillips who is working with six days of extended rest, grinding at-bats is exactly what Pittsburgh will need, and they have struggled to do it all month.
Miami enters this series finale riding four straight wins and having outscored Pittsburgh 10-2 across the first two games. Their 38-24 home record is the foundation of the Marlins ML play here. The park itself helps the case. loanDepot Park carries a 0.94 run factor and a 0.88 HR factor. It suppresses scoring, keeps the ball in the yard, and with an enclosed roof controlling conditions, neither offense gets a weather boost. The two wildcards on Miami's side are both playing at career highs right now. Esteury Ruiz is posting a 1.825 OPS over the last seven days and just hit a 384-foot, 105.1 mph exit velocity solo homer off Pittsburgh's pitching on Tuesday. Griffin Conine holds a 1.046 OPS against right-handed pitching this season and a 1.489 OPS over the last seven days. Ashcraft is a righty with zero recorded career plate appearances against Conine. That blind spot matters in a close game.
This is a series finale with both bullpens carrying heavy mileage from the first two games. Neither team will be asking their starter to go deep. Phillips managed four innings in his last start and has gone five in two of his previous three. Ashcraft has also been capped around five innings. The back-end innings will fall to relieved arms that have already worked this week. Miami's bullpen posts a 4.12 ERA but is pitching in front of one of the best home environments in the National League. Pittsburgh's bullpen is 3.57 ERA but supporting a lineup that cannot generate pressure on its own. The structure of this game favors the home team.

The player props sharpen the edges. Ashcraft Under 5.5 Ks at -111 is the best-priced prop on this slate given his four-start ceiling pattern. Phillips Over 3.5 Ks at -145 plays off Pittsburgh's offensive collapse. The two wild cards to watch are Conine and Ruiz. One is the hottest bat in baseball right now hitting right-handed pitching, and the other just hit a 105.1 mph exit velocity home run two days ago. Ashcraft has never faced Conine in a recorded plate appearance. That is not a comfortable spot for any pitcher. The caveat on everything here: baseball is baseball. Pittsburgh has the better starting pitcher by ERA this season and Ashcraft is capable of shutting down any lineup on a given day. One big inning from Lowe or Reynolds flips this entire game. Bet with confidence in the edge, not certainty in the outcome.
