Colorado's answer on the mound, Michael Lorenzen, is in worse shape. His 6.22 ERA leads the rotation in the wrong direction, and the 38 walks in 97 innings are the detail that matters most in tonight's MLB action. That is more than one free pass every 2.6 innings, against a Washington lineup running the second-best wRC+ (127) and first-place ISO (.226) in baseball over the last 30 days. Lorenzen's last three starts produced 1, 5, and 1 strikeout. He faces a Nationals offense that has scored 65 runs over its last 10 games. Free passes at altitude don't stay at first base.
Washington carries a 31-19 road record into Coors, against Colorado's 23-28 mark at home. Their lineup is built for exactly this situation. CJ Abrams owns a career .378 average and 1.155 OPS at Coors Field across 37 plate appearances, and his L7d OPS sits at 1.038 after a home run on July 20. James Wood posts a .401 on-base percentage and a 1.010 OPS against right-handed pitching this season. These are dangerous hitters in the best hitter's park in the sport, facing a pitcher who cannot find the strike zone consistently.
The Rockies are not without an offensive case. Goodman is scorching, Moniak has 15 home runs, and Jake McCarthy is slashing .305/.350/.512 on the season with 10 home runs. Mikolas has allowed 20 home runs in 94.1 innings (1.91 HR/9), and Colorado's lineup knows how to put the ball in the air at altitude. Both bullpens carry ERAs above 5.25, which means once these starters exit, the runs don't stop. Two ERA-bloated pitchers, two aggressive lineups, and a park that adds 25 percent to run totals by design.
Picks made July 21, 2026 at 05:44 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The sharpest individual prop is Mikolas Under 2.5 strikeouts at +104. Three recent starts, one cleared 2.5. Now pitching at altitude on extended rest against a contact lineup. That price should be negative, not plus-money. The caveat on the run line is real: Mikolas has blown up before (7 ER in 6 innings against Houston, 6 ER in 7 innings against Boston in recent starts), and if Colorado gets to him early, Goodman's lineup has the ceiling to keep things close. Goodman at +182 makes sense as the secondary play if you believe Colorado can run on Washington's bullpen. The risk on both sides is real, which is exactly what Coors Field does. It doesn't eliminate variance. It amplifies it.
