Then there is Bubba Chandler, who leads today's full 15-game MLB slate in one category no starter wants to top: walks issued. His 71 free passes in 142 innings compute to a 4.50 BB/9, the worst control rate among confirmed starters across the full Sunday card. In both of his 2026 starts at Wrigley Field, he failed to complete 5.2 innings. In April: 5.1 innings, 3 ER. May: 5 innings, 4 ER. That is not bad luck at a tough park. That is a pitcher whose mechanics crack under pressure against a disciplined lineup. Wrigley carries a runs park factor of 1.05 and a HR park factor of 1.1. When Chandler falls behind hitters and has to groove pitches, the consequences compound quickly at this address. Wind direction remains unavailable for Sunday, which is the one genuine wildcard. If it's blowing out toward left, this game could get untidy in a hurry.
Craig Counsell has already told you how his lineup plans to operate. After Saturday's 4-3 win, he was direct: "We had a lot of good at-bats. We saw pitches and we made them work. Nobody tried to be the hero. They just tried to win the pitch. That's good offense." That is practically a blueprint for beating a walk-prone starter. Nico Hoerner is the proof of concept: 3-for-6 with a 1.000 OPS in his six PA against Chandler this season. The Cubs walked nine times in their 12-2 blowout in Game 1 of this series. The approach is already calibrated, and Chandler has already shown he cannot stop it.
Pittsburgh is not without a counter-argument. The Pirates have gone 11-4 since August 24, the best record in MLB over that stretch, and Oneil Cruz has been their engine since returning from a hand injury, batting .315 with four home runs and 18 RBI in that window. But the Pirates are 36-41 in away games this season, their bullpen lost All-Ashcraft to the IL with right arm discomfort this week, and the pitching matchup in this specific game cuts hard against them. Context almost always wins in baseball. Today the context is stacked.
Picks made September 13, 2026 at 05:27 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The variance in this game lives in Oneil Cruz. Since returning August 18 from his hand injury, he is batting .315 with four home runs and 18 RBI. He is Pittsburgh's genuine power threat, and one Cruz swing ties a game that should be controlled. In 8 career PA against Boyd, Cruz hits .143 with a 0.536 OPS, which is encouraging. But hot hitters do not always follow career splits, and if the wind is blowing out at Wrigley, a single mistaken pitch to Cruz changes the run line calculus instantly. Factor that in before sizing up. The Boyd side is correct. The game is not guaranteed to be clean.
