On the other side, Sonny Gray is having arguably the best season of a long career. He is 17-5 with a 2.82 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 163 innings, and he is coming off 6 days of rest. The matchup history here is not favorable to Cleveland. Against this same Guardians lineup on May 30 of this year, Gray went 6 innings and struck out 7. In June 2025, he threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts. The Boston Red Sox have the right arm on the mound to keep this low-scoring, and Gray's elevated walk rate of 45 free passes in 163 innings is the only real crack in his profile tonight.
Context matters at Fenway. The Green Monster inflates doubles and the park's run factor leans slightly above neutral, but neither of these offenses is built to exploit that. Cleveland hits .239 as a team and manufactures runs through process. Boston ranks 20th in runs scored with a .318 wOBA that suggests contact but not production. The park suits a gap hitter more than a power hitter, which points directly at Chase DeLauter, who has posted a 1.167 OPS over the last 7 days and a .920 OPS over the last 28. His left-field gap power against a right-hander in a doubles park is one of the more compelling individual matchups tonight.
There is one structural wrinkle worth noting: no Boston batter has career matchup data against Griffin. That is a first-look situation for the entire Red Sox lineup. Hitters tend to be passive in their initial at-bats against an unfamiliar arm, which suppresses early-count swing rates and limits Griffin's strikeout accumulation. But that same passivity can work against Boston if Griffin commands the zone, because they will fall behind in counts early. The entire game script depends on Griffin's first two innings. His last three starts produced 5, 4, and 3 strikeouts with a catastrophic 8-earned-run outing in Baltimore mixed in. The trend is not encouraging.
Picks made September 23, 2026 at 05:34 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The best angle is the Guardians moneyline at +116, supported by the run line at -189 if you want the protection. The player props on both starters' strikeout totals reflect the specific mechanics of this game: Griffin's declining K count and abbreviated outings, Gray's consistently dominant strikeout rate against this specific lineup. The caveat is always Griffin. If he finds his command and works into the sixth inning as he did against Detroit on September 4, this game may finish 2-1 or 3-1 Cleveland and the under resolves easily. If he loses the zone in the first inning and walks a couple of batters, the game script shifts fast, the over comes into play, and the run line is the only bet still alive.
