The Milwaukee Brewers are the best team in baseball by run differential at +140, and they arrive in Game 2 having dropped a tight 3-2 opener. That is a textbook bounce-back spot. Specific hitters in this lineup have genuine history against Buehler: Jake Bauers has posted a 2.500 OPS with 1 home run in his career plate appearances against the right-hander, and Jackson Chourio carries a 2.000 career OPS against Buehler while running a 1.307 OPS over the past seven days. This Milwaukee lineup makes contact consistently. Against a starter whose strikeout execution has cratered (1 K in 4.1 IP on August 1, 3 K in 4.0 IP on August 6), that contact-first approach becomes a weapon. Harrison also has a direct blueprint on record: he shut out this exact San Diego Padres lineup on May 14 (5 IP, 0 ER, 7 K), with Tatis Jr. going 0-for-3 against him and posting a 0.000 OPS in their 2026 head-to-head.
There is one player in this game who changes every equation, and his name is Jackson Merrill. Since July 19, Merrill has put up a 1.146 OPS with 9 home runs in 22 games, leading all of MLB. He hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning of Game 1, the latest chapter in one of the most electric individual stretches of the 2026 season. Merrill said after that win: "We're playing great. We're playing together, and we're playing as a family. I love that." He is the one bat in this lineup with the ceiling to single-handedly flip a game's narrative against any starter, and he is the primary risk to any Milwaukee plan tonight in MLB action.
Petco's 0.88 HR factor is a mild damper on Merrill's power trajectory but does not neutralize it. What matters more structurally is Buehler's bullpen dependency. He has not gone deep in games recently, and forcing San Diego's bullpen into back-to-back heavy usage after it already worked cleanly in Game 1 (Yuki Matsui, Adrian Morejón, and Mason Miller all sharp) is exactly the kind of late-game exposure Milwaukee's lineup is built to exploit. The Brewers are patient, deep, and facing a starter with documented command and miss-rate problems. That is the core dynamic driving everything else in this game.

The caveat belongs entirely to Merrill. No single player in baseball is hotter right now, and he has shown repeatedly over the past month that one swing is all it takes. Harrison has also shown two-sided variance in recent outings: his 10-K gem against Pittsburgh on August 5 came directly after two rough exits (3 ER in 4 IP, then 3 ER in 2.2 IP). That inconsistency is real, and it is why the moneyline is a medium-confidence position rather than a strong one, and why the Padres +1.5 earns its place on the ticket. Treat all positions at appropriate stake sizes. Nothing in baseball is guaranteed, and Petco at night has a way of keeping games close.
