Yesavage's recent range of outcomes says everything. He posted 9 strikeouts in 4.0 innings at Boston on July 24 and 9 more in 6.0 innings against the White Sox on July 19. Both were dominant. The July 11 start against San Diego (1.2 innings, 7 walks, 4 earned runs) was not a contact failure. It was a command failure. That distinction matters here, because Washington's patient lineup can extract damage even against good secondary stuff if the pitcher cannot find the zone consistently.
On the other side is Zack Littell, the rotation's most visible problem. His 5.17 ERA understates the underlying regression, and he has allowed 25 home runs in 101.0 innings in 2026 at a rate of 2.23 per nine. Butera has tried piggyback openers to limit exposure, and by one account, "it hasn't worked very well." He enters on 11 days of extended rest, which creates real uncertainty. Is he recharged or just delayed? The lineup he faces does not care either way. CJ Abrams is posting a 1.516 OPS over his last seven days. James Wood has 30 home runs and a 1.141 OPS over the last 28 days. These are not numbers that give a 5.17-ERA pitcher room to work.
Nationals Park plays neutral, with a runs factor of 1.0 and a home run factor of 1.02, so the environment is not moving the needle in either direction. What shapes this game is the offensive asymmetry. Washington scores runs. Toronto, after shedding deadline pieces and absorbing Guerrero Jr.'s regression, ranks 3rd-to-last in wRC+. Both bullpens are taxed entering Game 3, and Washington's relievers carry a 5.3 ERA, which makes the later innings unpredictable for both clubs. In tonight's MLB action, the conditions point toward a higher-scoring finish with Washington holding the structural advantages.

The contrarian case for Toronto deserves to be named clearly before being set aside. Washington is 32-40 against right-handed pitching. That is a real split, not a rounding error, and Yesavage's elite underlying metrics (.197 xBA, 30.6% whiff) are exactly the profile that exploits it. Sharp money will follow Toronto at -133, and that is not irrational. But it requires Yesavage to stay out of his own way for six innings against a lineup that has proved all season it can hurt right-handers when given any kind of opportunity. At -110 versus -133, Washington gives you more room for variance and a better-constructed bet on the same game.
