Chicago's physical state heading into Friday is the real story. The White Sox burned eight relief pitchers over 13 innings in a loss to Boston on August 6, and now they're back at it with one day of rest. As Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said after that marathon game: "It was unbelievable. They just did not want to lose." He was talking about his own club, but the game was also Chicago's nightmare: a draining loss that consumed their bullpen and left them paper-thin for the very next night. Then there's catcher Joey Bart, who fractured his fifth metacarpal in his left hand after taking a 97.7 mph hit-by-pitch in that Boston game. He is expected to land on the IL, leaving a backup catcher to manage Schultz's outing on short notice.
Messick is locked in. He has logged exactly 6 strikeouts in each of his last three starts: 6 against Arizona (4.1 IP, 1 ER), 6 against Tampa Bay (7.2 IP, 1 ER), and 6 against Minnesota (5.2 IP, 1 ER). His 128 strikeouts in 129.2 innings this season work out to 8.9 K/9, and he has been particularly dominant against this lineup specifically. Chase Meidroth is 0-for-6 with a 0.000 OPS against him in 2026. Sam Antonacci is 0-for-3 (0.000 OPS). Andrew Benintendi is 0-for-2 (0.000 OPS). In his June 23 start against Chicago, Messick posted 10 strikeouts over 7.2 innings of work. That is a pattern, not a coincidence.
Both clubs carry three-game losing streaks into this one, so the momentum argument cancels out. But the physical reality is completely asymmetric. Cleveland arrives with its best starter on 6 days of rest and a bullpen posting a 3.76 ERA. Chicago arrives with a depleted relief corps, a missing starting catcher, and a starter who has failed to reach the fourth inning in two of his last four outings. If that early-exit pattern repeats tonight, the White Sox have almost nothing left to stop the bleeding.
Picks made August 07, 2026 at 05:38 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The best individual angle is the Meidroth hitless prop at +158. A batter who is 0-for-6 with a 0.000 OPS against tonight's starter should not be priced at only 38.8% implied probability for a hitless game. The run line at +104 is the second-best number: plus money on a team with a genuine pitching advantage and a documented bullpen mismatch is exactly the kind of edge worth pressing. One caveat stands: Chicago is 2-0 against Messick in 2026, and their 34-21 home record at Rate Field is not an accident. If Schultz channels his August 1 form and holds through five innings, this game stays competitive longer than the odds suggest. In baseball, the game has to be played. Account for variance and size your bets accordingly.
