On the other side, the Washington Nationals are handing the ball to Jackson Kent, a 23-year-old left-hander with zero career MLB statistics on record. There is no scouting profile in the data, no career matchup history against a single Cubs batter, and no recent start data to suggest how his stuff plays at this level. This is almost certainly a debut or near-debut outing. Kent is walking into a Cubs lineup that is 70-50, has a +109 run differential on the season, and is 21-12 against left-handed pitching in 2026. That is not a soft landing. Forecast conditions are 85 degrees with partial cloud cover, good hitting weather, and both offenses average more than 5.0 runs per game.
Washington's lineup has been hollowed out. Luis García Jr. was traded to the Yankees before the deadline. James Wood remains sidelined with injury. What remains is CJ Abrams, who is having a genuine breakout season at .286/.358/.547 with 29 home runs, and then a steep drop in offensive quality. Abrams is the entire Nationals offense right now, but he carries a real problem: 28 career PA against Peterson with a .167 average and 0.453 OPS. In his seven 2025 PA against Peterson, Abrams posted a 0.000 OPS. That is not noise. Peterson has consistently neutralized the Nationals' best bat across multiple seasons, and with García Jr. and Wood out of the lineup, he can work around everyone else.
One angle that casual bettors miss: the Nationals are 26-35 at Nationals Park this season. They are materially better on the road (33-27 away) than at home. Reflexively weighting a home team advantage here runs against the actual data. The Cubs won Game 1 of this series 8-6 on Tuesday. Chicago acquired Peterson at the trade deadline specifically to add rotation depth for a playoff push, and this matchup against an untested southpaw and a hollowed-out lineup is exactly the spot that investment was meant to win.

One honest caveat: debut arms are unpredictable by definition. Kent could be sharp for four innings. He could also walk the bases loaded in the third and let the Cubs put the game away early. Peterson's April disaster against this lineup (3.2 IP, 7 ER) is a real data point, not an outlier to dismiss. If Peterson falls apart and Kent finds a groove, the Nationals at +144 can steal this game. Keibert Ruiz is 20 career PA against Peterson at .353 and 0.753 OPS, and with Abrams as the primary lineup anchor, Peterson cannot afford to give Ruiz anything to drive. Back the Cubs -1.5, size it appropriately, and understand that a messy game is entirely on the table tonight.

Cubs vs Nationals predictions: Cubs -1.5 (-114) best bet vs debut arm Kent. Peterson stabilizing. Over 9.5 at +100 with both starters as run risks.
