Keider Montero counters for Detroit, and his 2026 numbers deserve more credit than he usually gets. A 3.30 ERA across 133.2 innings is the best full-season mark of his career, and his 30 walks all year reflect a pitcher who trusts his stuff and works to contact. He has managed 14 home runs allowed in those innings, which is solid. The structural problem tonight is Shohei Ohtani. In their only career meeting in 2024, Ohtani went 2-for-3 against Montero with a home run and a 3.000 OPS across just 3 plate appearances. Small sample, yes. But it is a loud one. Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández also posted 1.167 OPS each in that same 2024 exposure. Comerica Park's HR factor of 0.92 suppresses power in general, but Ohtani's 30-homer, .537 SLG season is not a general power bat. Montero's ability to keep the ball in the park early will determine how much oxygen Detroit has in this game.
Game 1 of this series produced a 2-1 Dodgers win that revealed some real problems for Los Angeles. The Dodgers stranded 13 runners, drew 9 walks, and needed an eighth-inning RBI single from Freeman just to survive. Detroit's only run came from Max Clark's RBI triple in the fifth inning. As Tigers manager A.J. Hinch put it after the game: "We wanted to beat him. We put a couple good swings on him. We put a little pressure on him. But he was good, as he always is." That "him" was Tarik Skubal. Today it is Snell. The challenge for Detroit just got significantly harder, but the Dodgers' offensive inefficiency is real. They have gone 30-46 in their last 30 games. That number matters when you are trying to project a winning margin.
Detroit enters at 2-8 in its last 10 and sitting 9.0 games out of first place, playing out a lost season in MLB. Los Angeles holds a one-game lead over Atlanta for NL second place and needs every win it can find. Roberts has handled Snell with extraordinary caution all year, 21 total innings on extended rest between each outing. If Snell is pulled after five innings with a lead, the game shifts to a Los Angeles bullpen that held Detroit scoreless for three innings Thursday. That safety net is strong but it tightens the ceiling on how large any margin can realistically grow. That ceiling is exactly the thesis behind tonight's best play.
Picks made August 29, 2026 at 05:32 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The under at 7.0 is a secondary play at LOW confidence, grounded in a 0.1-run edge that barely clears the noise threshold. Play it lightly. For props, Montero's under 3.5 strikeouts is the cleanest individual bet on the board, backed by a 2026 K/9 of 5.99 and a three-start average of 2.67 punchouts that includes a zero-strikeout outing. Snell's over 6.5 strikeouts at medium confidence adds upside given his 11.14 K/9 and the Tigers' weakness against lefthanders. This game will be decided on the mound. Build your card around the pitching data and keep the totals side light.
