Cody Bradford takes the ball for Texas. His 2026 ERA sits at 2.38 across 11.1 innings, and the profile behind that number is just as clean: zero home runs allowed, three walks, six strikeouts. He is not missing bats at a high rate, a 4.86 K/9 tells you that, but he keeps the ball on the ground and out of the seats. His last outing, seven innings against the Angels on August 11, produced just one strikeout. The defense does the work when Bradford is on. That is fine until it is not, and against a team with real offensive talent in the Athletics' lineup, that thin margin matters. He has faced this Oakland club before: seven scoreless innings in August 2024, six plus with no runs allowed in April of that same year. He knows this lineup.
Jacob Lopez is the more complicated case. His 2026 ERA reads 5.38 across 82.0 innings, which looks rough. But look at the last three starts: 5 strikeouts against Tampa Bay, 9 against Cincinnati, 8 against Boston, with a 2.60 ERA over that stretch. He is averaging 7.3 strikeouts per outing across that sample. His 2026 K/9 is 8.23 across 82.0 innings. The bat-missing ability is real regardless of where the season ERA sits. The problem has been command: 44 walks in 82.0 innings translates to a 4.83 BB/9 rate that creates constant traffic. Texas bats .242 as a team. If Lopez throws strikes, this matchup gets difficult for the Rangers.
The context surrounding the pitchers matters too. This is game three of a three-game series, and both bullpens have been leaned on. The Athletics enter at 48-75 with a 4-16 record over their last 20 games, one of the worst recent records in baseball. More relevant for today: they are 15-32 against left-handed pitching in 2026. Bradford walking to the mound puts Oakland's offense in its least comfortable spot. Sutter Health Park carries neutral park factors, no Coors Field inflation to distort the math, which means the pitchers are the story from the first pitch to the last out.
Picks made August 16, 2026 at 05:36 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The best number on this board is Lopez's strikeout line. He has gone over 4.5 Ks in each of his last three outings with room to spare, and the 4.5 line sits well below what he has been producing consistently. That is where the highest conviction lives in this game. The Gelof-under at +166 layers on top as a BvP-supported secondary play worth the price given his 0-for career line against Bradford. The variance to account for: if Bradford exits before completing five innings and Oakland's 4.85 bullpen ERA pitchers inherit traffic, the total picture changes in a hurry. That is the risk you accept when playing the Under in a series finale with taxed arms on both sides of the field.
