The Pittsburgh Pirates counter with Bubba Chandler, who enters Yankee Stadium in one of the harder environments for a pitcher with a command problem. Chandler has walked 55 batters in 94.1 innings this season, a 5.25 BB/9 rate that plays dangerously in a park with a home run factor of 1.15 and a short right field porch built for left-handed power. His last three starts: 4 ER in 4.0 IP at Washington, 2 ER in 4.2 IP against Milwaukee, 5 ER in 6.1 IP at Philadelphia. There is real swing-and-miss potential in that arm. The strike-throwing has not arrived consistently yet.
Pittsburgh's lineup enters with a structural issue that cuts against them before Fried throws his first pitch. The Pirates are 10-19 against left-handed starters this season, one of the worst records vs LHP in baseball. The career data against Fried deepens that story. Lowe carries a .000 OPS in 4 career looks. Ozuna is .125 with a .250 OPS across 8 PA. Triolo is .143 with a .286 OPS in 7 PA. The exception is Bryan Reynolds, who has a .304 average and .811 OPS in 24 career PA against Fried, including a 1.666 OPS in their 2025 matchup. He is the one Pittsburgh bat that has genuinely handled this pitcher over multiple seasons. Esmerlyn Valdez is the wild card. He has a 1.534 vL split and a 1.318 OPS over the last 28 days, but no career data against Fried exists in the matchup logs. A right-handed hitter who feasts on lefties, facing a rusty southpaw for the first time, is exactly the kind of unpredictable at-bat that can flip a game script.
Game three context matters. Both bullpens have been used across a high-leverage series that saw New York win 8-5 Monday. With Fried almost certainly capped at 70-80 pitches on return from a 70-day absence, the Yankees will lean on a relieving staff carrying a 2.87 ERA. That is a capable bridge, but it is being asked to cover innings for the third consecutive night.
Picks made July 22, 2026 at 05:39 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The Over 8.5 is the less obvious play, and the logic is worth sitting with. Chandler walks too many hitters to keep games clean at Yankee Stadium. Fried's pitch count creates an early handoff to tired arms. Games structured this way tend to produce runs in the middle and late innings, not just from the offenses, but from the accumulated fatigue of pitchers who have been working all series. Both picks carry LOW confidence, and that label should be taken seriously. Fried's health is unknown. The margins at these lines are thin. These are situational cases, not conviction plays. Size accordingly and do not chase outcomes. For the full slate, see our MLB picks today, NRFI picks, and player props.
