Johnson's recent track record is alarming. In his last start on July 25 at San Francisco, he lasted 3.1 innings and surrendered 8 earned runs. His two prior outings went 5.0 innings each but produced a combined 4 earned runs against Detroit and Minnesota. He has allowed 11 home runs in 41.2 innings, issued 17 walks, and has never faced the Brewers in his career. Milwaukee's lineup is 47-30 against righthanders this season with a plus-132 run differential, best in the National League. Brice Turang is their table-setter and he is scorching right now, posting a 1.062 OPS over the last seven days and a .916 OPS against righthanders on the season. Jake Bauers is equally dangerous at 1.173 OPS over the last seven days. Rookies facing this lineup cold rarely survive deep into the game.
Drohan is not at his peak either. He allowed 5 earned runs in 6 innings against Colorado on July 24 and has dropped two of his last three decisions. But a 3.51 ERA starter going through a rough patch is a different situation than a 7.34 ERA starter going through one. Angel Stadium plays slightly pitcher-friendly with a runs factor of 0.97 and a HR factor of 0.98, and that environment should help Drohan's approach against a lineup batting .239 as a team. The hidden number that gets buried under the Johnson narrative: the Angels are 11-19 against left-handed pitching this season, their worst split by record. Tonight they face a lefthander.
The organizational backdrop in Anaheim is impossible to ignore. Angels Interim GM John Mozeliak addressed the team's direction openly: "As we enter this trading period, one of the things we are focused on is understanding change. Clearly, where the Angels are right now, we need to do some things differently." Zach Neto is drawing heavy trade interest from multiple playoff contenders, and the roster just absorbed a 4-7 loss to Houston as part of a three-game losing streak. Suzuki acknowledged the emotional weight of the moment: "There's that human element that goes into it, but I understand. It's part of the game." A franchise in visible sell mode, playing host to the NL's best team, is a difficult spot to find focus.
Picks made July 31, 2026 at 05:25 AM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The contrarian angle is worth naming. Sharp bettors can look at the Los Angeles Angels at plus odds and note that Drohan has dropped two of his last three starts, gave up 5 earned runs in his last outing, and has shown some command wobble recently. A motivated roster playing spoiler before a trade-deadline dispersal is not an impossible story. But the Angels are 11-19 against lefthanders, and Drohan at 3.51 ERA is not a pitcher whose rough patch should be extrapolated into a trend. The data still points toward Milwaukee. The picks I trust most in this game are Johnson Under 4.5 strikeouts at -145, which has direct recent support from his last three starts, and Turang Over 1.5 total bases at plus money, which reflects concrete form against a hittable righthander. Keep position sizes proportional to confidence levels. The LOW confidence total and LOW confidence YRFI exist for a reason, and not every edge deserves the same stake.
