Sunderland arrive in the worst possible condition. This is their fourth match in 12 days. Reinildo is suspended after picking up a second yellow against Arsenal, leaving Dayann Methalie to make what could be his Premier League debut at left-back. Omar Alderete is a major doubt after coming off with a muscle injury in Wednesday's Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar. Habib Diarra is out with a hamstring problem. Sunderland have scored just three league goals all season and their away record reads zero wins, one draw, one defeat. On paper, this is as compromised as a visiting side can look.
The one subplot worth talking through is Haaland's curious blank against Sunderland. He has faced them twice in English football and never scored, making them the only Premier League club he has yet to put away. That novelty will likely end today. His form is exceptional, four goals from four league games, 16 shots, 0.86 xG per 90 minutes, and now he meets a defence that is missing its first-choice left-back and may be without a starting centre-back. The mismatch is about as clean as the matchday gets.
Phil Foden is also absent, serving the second game of a three-match ban. But Cherki has stepped into that creative void with genuine authority. Two goals and two assists in four league outings, 10 key passes in 223 minutes. With Foden out, Cherki becomes the primary link between midfield and Haaland, and his left-side combination with Semenyo is the specific tactical weapon Methalie will have to handle on debut.
Picks made September 19, 2026 at 05:36 PM ET. Odds shown reflect current market prices.
The best structure here is pairing BTTS No with Over 2.5 goals, which amounts to backing City to score multiple times and keep a clean sheet. Those two picks support each other and the underlying xG data backs both. Haaland's shots on target over 1.5 at -167 is the sharpest single-market play, given his 2.25 shots on target per appearance rate this season. For the value hunters, Le Fée at +700 as an anytime scorer is the one worth a small speculative stake given his confirmed penalty duties with Diarra out. The contrarian in me does note that Sunderland's season xGD is actually positive at plus 0.78, they create more than they concede on paper, but correcting a minus-four finishing underperformance at the Etihad against this City side is an enormous ask.
One honest caveat on the handicap. City -1.5 AH at +102 is tempting because of the positive odds, but I would not load up on it. Sunderland's Xhaka-Sadiki pivot can keep things compact long enough to make a single-goal margin a real risk, even against a side this dominant. Back City to win with confidence. Back clean sheet and goal volume as your structural plays. Save the handicap for light exposure only. For more predictions, check our Premier League picks today and BTTS picks.
